Job Summary
A Veterinary Technician assists veterinary staff in the documentation and veterinary clinical care of all laboratory animal health cases. The goal of this department is to collaborate with and provide expert support to our research scientists in the discovery, characterization, and development of novel therapeutic products for a variety of human diseases. As a Laboratory Animal Sciences (LAS) team, we are dedicated to providing excellent animal care, progressive veterinary medicine, and expert lab animal science knowledge.

Responsibilities
  • Assist veterinary staff in the documentation and veterinary clinical care of all laboratory animal health cases identified by technical staff and/or veterinarians. Effectively communicate any animal issues to veterinary staff and Study Directors.
  • Monitors animal health, by performing rounds, responding to animal health reports, and by following schedules. Maintains appropriate medical records for each animal in accordance with study and regulatory requirements.  
  • Consult with veterinarians and veterinary staff on treatment options. Generates animal treatment records and perform, track and schedule follow-ups.
  • Performs routine veterinary technical and husbandry skills including but not limited to the following:
    • administer medications by oral, topical and injectable routes of administration
    • verifies drugs/medications prior to use and calculates dose administrations
    • responsible for routine animal manipulations and administration of fluids or other treatments as required
    • bandage/wrapping techniques
    • nail/teeth clipping/trimming
    • venipuncture techniques
    • monitor critical care animals (i.e., place IVs, monitor fluids, etc.)
    • specimen collection such as blood and feces
    • may be responsible for euthanasia, tissue sampling
  • Responsible to assess animal health and under supervision, may be responsible to provide immediate care to emergency cases.
  • May assist with minor surgical procedures.
  • Assist in keeping inventory and monitoring expiration dates of veterinary supplies.
  • May be responsible for the documentation and distribution of controlled substances under the guidance of the DEA Officer (DO).
  • Responsible for sanitization of assigned areas.
  • Independently reads and understands study protocols and relevant SOPs prior to performing associated duties on designated research projects.
  • May review company guidelines and SOPs.
  • May acquire Designated Trainer role.
  • Comprehends procedures and performs tasks according to company policies and SOPs.
  • Complies with all regulatory guidelines, occupational health as well as health and safety programs, in accordance with company policies and procedures.
  • Performs other duties as required.

Education and Experience Requirements:
  • Required: CVT
  • Preferred: experience with Non-Human Primates, any level of AALAS certification
  • Experience in a fast paced environment
